Here’s one thing we must never forget:
We are always influenced by something.
Whether it’s good or bad, by accident or on purpose, we learn from our surroundings.
Most people seem to be apathetic towards this fact, thinking they are superior to what goes inside them. But as the people say, you are what you eat. If you fill your heart with lies, you’ll produce lies. If you fill your mind with worrisome tasks, you’ll be ridden with anxiety. But those are only the negative aspects of influence.
There’s a brighter side to this.
Paul talks about this in Philippians 4:8. Fill your mind with truth, and don’t just try to muster up wonderful thoughts while being influenced by deadly words. You can’t serve two masters. You have to focus on what you’ll be influenced by.
It’s a choice, to put it simply.
Jesus was influenced by the Father and every word he spoke to him. He constantly reminded his disciples of this, too. (John 5:19)
So this begs the question: what are you influenced by?
