“I’ve heard a thousand stories
Of what they think You’re like.
But I’ve heard the tender whisper
Of love in the dead of night.” (Good Good Father by Housefires)
As I dwelled in God’s presence this morning, I listened to this song and thereafter couldn’t get the first part out of my head all day.
I think too often in my life, and maybe in yours too, we hear about this God, we hear about this Jesus guy. Some of it sounds amazing, while some of it sounds repulsive. We don’t know what to believe. In other words, we hear a thousand stories of who others think God is. Some say he’s loving; some say he’s an angry God.
But that’s when the second part comes in—the part about experiencing it for yourself. God is a personal God and wants an ongoing relationship with his children. Some may go through life thinking they can know everything about God, but it will only go so far. You have to know him. And to know him means you have to know what he says and what he does. You have to swallow his words and digest them; you have to step out from your comfort zone and walk among the crashing waves.
So, just for a moment, stop listening to the stories. Stop reading this blog. Go experience it yourself. He’s calling you out into deeper waters, tenderly whispering in the dead of night. He’s here right now, and it’s time to listen to his voice—to his words.
Come close to God, and he will come close to you. (James 4:8a)
